Frequently Asked Questions

How is Snips and PDFs usage shared in organizations?
In a Mathpix Snip organization, Snips and PDFs usage is "pooled," meaning all members of the organization share a single pool of available Snips and PDFs. This approach allows flexibility and efficiency in resource usage across teams.
Can I cancel the subscription in the middle of the month/year, so that I don’t forget to turn it off later?
Yes, you can cancel your Mathpix subscription at any time. Upon cancellation, your subscription will remain active until the end of the current billing cycle, whether it's monthly or yearly. After this period, your subscription will not renew, and you won't incur further charges.
I forgot to cancel my subscription and got charged. Can I get a refund?

According to our Terms of Use, subscriptions are non-refundable. If you forgot to cancel before your renewal date, the charge cannot be reversed, and the subscription will remain active until the end of the current billing cycle (monthly or yearly).

You can cancel your subscription at any time to avoid future charges. To manage your subscription, go to the Billing section of your Mathpix account.

I’ve bought the one year Pro plan with my Alipay account, but my subscription has not been upgraded. What should I do?

If your subscription hasn’t been upgraded after paying via Alipay, here’s what you can do:

  1. Check Payment Status: Confirm that the payment was successfully processed in your Alipay account.
  2. Possible Payment Issue: Occasionally, Alipay payments might show as deducted, but the transfer to Mathpix could fail.
    • If this happens, Alipay will automatically refund the payment within a few hours.
    • Once refunded, you can try the payment again. Make sure to stay on the Alipay page until you are redirected back to accounts.mathpix.com to ensure the payment completes.
  3. Contact Support: If the payment was successful and you didn’t receive the subscription upgrade, please contact us at support@mathpix.com with:
    • The email address linked to your Mathpix account.
    • Proof of payment (e.g., a screenshot or transaction ID from Alipay).
I require more usage than available in the Pro plan. Can I increase my image and PDF limit?

Yes, if you've reached your Pro plan's monthly limit, you can enable Extra Usage to process additional Snips and PDFs beyond your plan's allowance. The current Extra Usage rates are:

  • Snips: $0.002 per Snip
  • PDFs: $0.01 per PDF page

These charges will be added to your next billing cycle. To enable or disable Extra Usage:

  1. Log in to your Mathpix account.
  2. Navigate to the Billing section in your dashboard.
  3. Toggle the Extra Usage option on or off as needed.
I signed up with a .edu email but my usage limits stayed the same. What should I do?
Please contact our support team at support@mathpix.com with the .edu email address you used to sign up, and we’ll assist you in resolving this issue.

What happens to our end-user’s images when using the Convert API in our product?

When your product sends images to the Mathpix Convert API, the following occurs:

  • Processing: The images are processed to extract the desired information, such as text, mathematical expressions, or chemical diagrams.
  • Temporary Storage: To ensure service quality and allow for quality assurance, images and their associated data are temporarily stored.
  • Retention Period: By default, these images are retained for up to 90 days. However, you have the option to opt out of data retention for quality assurance purposes. If you choose to opt out, images are deleted within 24 hours after processing.

Mathpix is committed to maintaining the confidentiality and security of your data. We do not use your end-users' images for any purpose other than providing the requested service and improving our recognition engine, if permitted. For more detailed information, please refer to our Privacy Policy.

If you have specific data handling requirements or need further assurances, please contact us at support@mathpix.com.

What if we want Mathpix to delete all images processed from our API key immediately?

If you want Mathpix to delete all images processed from your API key immediately after processing, you can enable Data Retention Opt-Out in your Convert API settings. With this option:

  • No Data Retention: Images and associated processing results are deleted within 24 hours and are never saved to disk at any point.
  • Immediate Deletion Option: If you require immediate deletion, contact support@mathpix.com to discuss custom configurations or specific data handling needs.

For more details on this feature and other privacy controls, refer to the Convert API Privacy FAQ.

What is the OCR billing cycle for Pay as you Go users?

For Pay as you Go (PAYG) users, the billing cycle is as follows:

  • You are billed on the 1st of each month for the previous month's usage.
  • The invoice includes the total number of Snips and PDFs processed during the previous month

For more details refer to the Convert API Billing FAQ.

I would like to try the Convert API before buying. Can I have a free trial?

While we don’t offer a free trial for the Convert API, you can try Mathpix’s capabilities using our Snip app, which has a free plan. The Snip app and the Convert API offer exactly the same conversion features, so you can fully test Mathpix’s capabilities before using the API.

The Snip app is available for desktop and mobile, and it’s a great way to explore Mathpix before committing to the Convert API. If you’re interested in testing the API itself or need assistance, feel free to contact us at support@mathpix.com.

I am worried that if I make a mistake and send tons of requests, I could accidentally end up paying a lot of money. Is there a mechanism in place where the system would reject my requests instead of charging me?

Yes, there are several safeguards in place to help prevent unexpected high charges:

  1. Rate Limits: The API key has default rate limits to ensure requests don’t spike unexpectedly. If the limit is exceeded, additional requests will be rejected.
  2. Monthly Limits for PDFs: There is a total monthly limit on the number of PDF pages that can be processed per API key. Once this limit is reached, further requests will be blocked for that month.
  3. Usage Monitoring: You can track your usage in real time via your Mathpix dashboard, so it’s easy to keep an eye on consumption and spot anything unusual.
  4. Billing Notifications: We send email reminders when your usage approaches certain thresholds to keep you informed and help prevent accidental overuse.
  5. Custom Controls: If needed, you can request custom rate or usage limits to better align with your requirements.
I need to process a high volume of images. How can I increase my monthly image limit?

If you need to process more images than your current limits allow, here’s what you can do:

  1. Increase Limits on Your Dashboard:
    • Log in to console.mathpix.com.
    • Navigate to the Requests tab under your organization.
    • You can adjust the rate limits and monthly page limits directly from the dashboard to better match your processing needs.
  2. Contact Support for Higher Limits:
    • If your required limits exceed what’s adjustable on the dashboard, contact us at support@mathpix.com.
    • We can work with you to create a custom plan tailored to your specific needs.
I have a large volume of documents and don’t need them converted in real time. Do you have another service that can handle this?

Yes, we offer Secure Conversion Services (SCS) for batch processing large volumes of documents. This service is designed for organizations that don’t require real-time processing and prioritize secure, efficient, and scalable conversion.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I use SCS instead of Convert API?
  • High-volume processing: If you need to process more than tens of millions of PDF pages in a short period of time, SCS is designed for large-scale batch jobs and can handle this efficiently.
  • Asynchronous workflows: When real-time results aren’t necessary, SCS processes documents in the background, making it ideal for big jobs.
  • Advanced workflow needs: While our API is highly secure, SCS is tailored for workflows that require additional customization and direct integration with storage providers like AWS S3, GCP GCS, Alibaba OSS, and Baidu BOS, ensuring seamless and secure data handling at scale.
What are some use cases for SCS?

Secure Conversion Services (SCS) is ideal for:

  1. Training and fine-tuning large language models (LLMs): Preparing massive datasets from PDFs or images for training or fine-tuning LLMs. SCS’s scalability and ability to generate structured outputs make it perfect for producing high-quality training data.
  2. Enterprise document processing: Converting large volumes of legal, financial, or technical documents into structured data for internal systems, analysis, or archival purposes.
  3. Large-scale academic archives: Universities and research institutions digitizing and processing massive collections of research papers, lecture notes, or archives into accessible formats.
  4. Publishing and content digitization: Publishers processing books, journals, or articles with complex layouts, including math, tables, and images, for online or print use.
  5. Custom workflows for sensitive data: Organizations with strict privacy and data security requirements that need direct integration with storage providers such as AWS S3, Microsoft Azure, GCP GCS, Alibaba OSS, or Baidu BOS. SCS enables secure management of input and output data within designated storage buckets.
  6. High-volume projects with flexible timelines: Handling tens of millions of documents asynchronously for projects where scalability and efficiency are key, but immediate, real-time results aren’t necessary.

SCS is particularly well-suited for industries leveraging LLMs and AI, as well as organizations requiring secure, efficient, and large-scale batch processing.

How do you use SCS?

Using SCS involves these steps:

  1. Set up access to your storage provider:
    • Grant Mathpix access to your storage bucket (e.g., AWS S3, Microsoft Azure, GCP GCS, Alibaba OSS, Baidu BOS) via access tokens.
  2. Upload input files to your bucket:
    • Place your input files (PDFs or images) in a designated folder within your storage bucket.
  3. Configure SCS processing:
    • Mathpix processes the documents asynchronously, pulling input files from your bucket, running OCR or conversion, and writing the results back to an output folder in the same bucket.
  4. Retrieve processed results:
    • Processed outputs, such as structured data (e.g., Mathpix Markdown), are saved in your designated output folder for easy retrieval.

For more details, or to get started with SCS, contact support@mathpix.com.

How fast can SCS process documents?

SCS is designed for large-scale, high-speed processing. It can handle hundreds of millions of pages per day and scale to process several billion pages in just a few weeks.

This speed makes it ideal for organizations managing massive workloads, like converting large archives or running extensive data extraction projects. The exact processing time depends on document complexity and file size, but SCS is built to maximize efficiency and throughput.

If you’re working with tight timelines, feel free to reach out to discuss your specific requirements, and we can help optimize the process for your needs.

What output formats are available?

SCS can generate outputs in the following formats:

  • Markdown
  • Mathpix Markdown
  • LaTeX
  • DOCX
  • HTML
  • lines.json

You can select one or multiple formats based on your requirements.

Does SCS use the latest OCR models?
Yes, SCS always runs the latest Mathpix OCR models to deliver the most accurate and reliable results.
What is the minimum volume required for SCS?
SCS is designed for large-scale projects, with a minimum recommended volume of tens of millions of pages.
Is there a maximum file size or page count?
There are no strict limits on file size or page count. However, for optimization, we recommend splitting files with more than 5,000 pages into smaller parts.
