Frequently Asked Questions
To obtain an API key for the Mathpix Convert API, follow these steps:
- Create a Convert Organization: Log in to your Mathpix account, navigate to the Convert Organizations Page, and click Create organization.
- Set Up Billing: Add a credit or debit card. A one-time, non-refundable setup fee is required to activate your API keys.
- Access Your API Key: Once created, your API key will be displayed on the dashboard. You can create additional keys by clicking Create Key.

- Processing: Images are processed to extract text, math, or chemical diagrams.
- Temporary Storage: Images are temporarily stored for quality assurance.
- Retention: Default retention is 30 days. You can opt out, and images are deleted within 24 hours.
We do not use your end-users' images for any purpose other than providing the requested service. See our Privacy Policy for details. Contact support@mathpix.com for specific data handling requirements.
You can enable Data Retention Opt-Out in your Convert API settings:
- No Data Retention: Images and results are deleted within 24 hours and are never saved to disk.
- Immediate Deletion: Contact support@mathpix.com for custom configurations.

You are billed on the 1st of each month for the previous month's usage. The invoice includes the total number of images and PDF pages processed. For more details, see the Convert API Billing FAQ.
A $29 credit is applied to your account for testing. You can also try our Snip app (free plan), which uses the same conversion features as the Convert API. It's a great way to explore Mathpix before committing. Contact support@mathpix.com if you need further assistance.
Several safeguards are in place:
- Rate Limits: Default rate limits prevent request spikes. Excess requests are rejected.
- Monthly PDF Limits: A total monthly limit on PDF pages per API key. Further requests are blocked when reached.
- Usage Monitoring: Track usage in real time via your Mathpix dashboard.
- Billing Notifications: Email reminders when usage approaches thresholds.
- Custom Controls: Request custom rate or usage limits to match your requirements.
- Adjust on Dashboard: Log in to console.mathpix.com, go to the Requests tab, and adjust rate limits and monthly page limits directly.
- Contact Support: For limits beyond what the dashboard allows, contact support@mathpix.com for a custom plan.
